Task force wants to allow “local option” on same-sex unions

The nation’s fifth-largest Protestant denomination, the 4.7 million-member Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), may soon join the troubled Episcopal Church in permitting clergy with homosexual partners. A task force proposed Feb. 19 that August’s ELCA assembly authorize 65 regional synods and local congregations to liberalize if they wish.

James Dobson has stepped down as chairman of Focus on the Family, the conservative group he founded more than 30 years ago as a voice on moral issues like abortion and marriage.
Dobson, 72, made the announcement Friday at a staff worship service, after discussing the decision with fellow board members earlier in the week.
His reasoning pointed toward the need for an effective transition in leadership for his organization.

There was a solar eclipse earlier this month — but it wasn’t visible anywhere on Earth.

Rather, a Japanese space probe in orbit around the moon got spectacular high-definition video of the sun being blocked — by the Earth, producing an otherworldly “diamond-ring” eclipse.

It may be only the third time such an eclipse has been viewed by terrestrials, human or otherwise.

You may have read the news that Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple Computer, has signed on to compete in this season’s “Dancing With the Stars.” The very idea that the man once called “The King of the Nerds” would be out tripping the light fantastic in competition with professional athletes, B-list movie stars and entertainers no doubt drew a derisive chuckle. Or perhaps just a sad shake of the head: What’s Woz up to now?
