Practical atheism|Worldmag

The Slow Slide

“Hypocrisy in one Age,” warned Joseph Addison, “is generally succeeded by Atheism in another.” Consider this in light of charges that America is becoming, according to a Trinity College survey, less Christian. It’s not that Americans are converting to other religions, it’s that they are more willing to avow nothing. One researcher blames Christianity’s association with conservative politics for turning people away. Sexual abuse by Catholic priests also tarnished us, he says. Underlying it all is a cultural shift that makes atheism more publicly acceptable. Recognizing this trend, President Obama became the first president to pay homage to nonbelievers in his inaugural address…
While the vast majority of Americans claim to be Christian, in other words, a good many of us don’t seem capable of explaining what that means. Little wonder the comically vicious Bill Maher had such a field day filming a mockumentary wherein he accosted Christians about their faith. Not knowing what we believe makes it awfully hard to answer why we believe it. It shouldn’t surprise us if Christians who can’t articulate what they believe have children and grandchildren who don’t even bother to try. And this is exactly what we are seeing, as large numbers of young people stop attending church altogether upon leaving home.

Students fear ‘anti-religious indoctrination’|Worldnetdaily

Resolution

Elected student leaders at American River College in Sacramento, Calif., have adopted a resolution that seeks to protect classmates from the “anti-religious and political indoctrination” of professors and others on campus. “I think we have accomplished a historic and very significant act today by passing this resolution to advocate for a Student Bill of Rights,” said student Rep. George Popko, who authored the resolution. The measure was adopted by an 8-1 vote. “The purpose of the resolution is to go on record asking the administration to adopt the Student Bill of Rights as official campus policy,” the 22-year-old councilman said. The resolution models activist David Horowitz’s “Student Bill of Rights,” a bill which was introduced to the California senate as SB 5 in 2005. Popko says he plans to present a Student Bill of Rights Resolution containing those provisions on May 3 before the General Assembly of the Student Senate of California Community Colleges, an organization representing 2.7 million college students.

Islamic Scholars Seek ‘Muslim Reformation’|CBN

Reformation

ISTANBUL, Turkey – You have probably heard of the Christian Protestant Reformation. Now get ready for what some are calling a Muslim reformation.
A group of Islamic scholars in Turkey is attempting to re-interpret some of Islam’s most sacred texts. The goal: to give the faith a modern makeover. Mehmet Kirbasoglu is passionate about his faith in Allah, the Muslim God. But he believes that his religion needs a fresh interpretation for the 21st Century.
“We need a new way of looking at our holy scriptures in the light of today’s social and religious environment,” Kirbasoglu said.
And so for the past few years, Kirbasoglu, and 80 other Muslim Turkish scholars, have been examining the Hadith — a collection of some 170,000 sayings attributed to the prophet Mohammed.

Pro-life pastor spends week in jail|Onenewsnow

Pro Life

Pastor Walter Hoye has spent a week in a California jail on charges related to his ministry at a Berkeley abortion clinic.
Hoye was ordered to serve 30 days in jail and pay a $1,000 fine after refusing the court’s offer of probation. Catie Short of the Life Legal Defense Foundation explains that Hoye declined probation because the court ordered him not to help women.
“He told the court that he would do his best to comply with the law,” says Short. “It’s not like he’s saying, ‘I’m going to go out there and violate the law. But in the meantime, I want to be able to go and offer alternatives to women who are considering abortion.’”The judge ordered him to stay 100 yards away from the abortion clinic, which Short calls a severe restriction on free speech. She has also filed suit in federal court asking that the ordinance Hoye violated be declared unconstitutional.

Iowa Court

DES MOINES, Iowa – The Iowa Supreme Court says the state’s same-sex marriage ban violates the constitutional rights of gay and lesbian couples, making it the third state where gay marriage is legal.
In a unanimous ruling issued Friday, the court upheld a 2007 Polk County District Court judge’s ruling that the law was unconstitutional.
The case stems from a 2005 lawsuit filed by Lambda Legal, a New York-based gay rights organization. The group filed a lawsuit on behalf of six gay and lesbian Iowa couples who were denied marriage licenses.

Christian valedictorian case headed for Supreme Court|Onenewsnow

 McComb
Attorneys for a high school valedictorian whose microphone was turned off when she began sharing her Christian faith say they’ll appeal her case to the U.S. Supreme Court.
The Rutherford Institute is representing Brittany McComb, whose lawsuit against school officials was dismissed Friday by the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. The appeals court stated that “by preventing her from making a proselytizing graduation speech,” McComb’s free speech and free exercise rights were not violated, nor was her right to equal protection.
n June 2006, McComb strayed from her school-approved script to tell how faith in Jesus had filled a void in her life. Her microphone was shut off in mid-sentence as she said, “God’s love is so great that he gave up — gave up his only Son…” The audience responded with boos and shouts to turn it back on, and responded similarly when school officials attempted to introduce the next valedictorian speaker, saying “she deserves this chance to speak.”

Jury Finds KS Abortion Doctor Not Guilty|CBN

WICHITA, Kan. – Jurors have acquitted one of the nation’s few late-term abortion providers of violating Kansas law requiring an independent second opinion for the procedure.
But moments after the verdict was announced Friday, the state’s medical board made public a complaint against Dr. George Tiller on similar allegations.
Tiller was found not guilty of 19 misdemeanor charges stemming from abortions he performed at his Wichita clinic in 2003. Prosecutors had alleged that a doctor he used for second opinions was essentially an employee of his and not independent as state law requires.

The Scandal of the AIG Bonuses|Christianity Today

AIG Scandal

On the surface, it sounds like a healthy company was rewarding its best and brightest. Over 400 employees recently received bonuses. Three-fourths of the company received more than $100,000. Fifty-one employees received $1 to $2 million; fifteen received more that $2 million, and six received $4 million. The highest bonus stood at $6.4 million. Bonuses.

That’s on top of a salary we can assume is decent to begin with, given the size of the company. But, hey, this is capitalism. And you reward people for raising the bottom line, making stockholders richer, offering services — in this case, insurance — that betters the lives of your customers and society.

Except for the fact that these bonuses were handed out to executives of a company on the verge of collapse, one that has lost more money in three months — $62 billion in the last quarter alone —
